In yesterday’s devotional we discussed the armor of God as a defense against the wiles of the devil and evils of this world. We also addressed the fact that one acquires such armor through studying the Bible. Today, we will begin the process of taking a more detailed look into the spiritual elements that Apostle Paul defines as components of the armor of God — specifically Truth. This brings us to our key text coming out of Ephesians 6:14 — 17 (KJV). The Word of the Lord reads:
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
When we study the scriptures, we should become girded with truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the sword of the Holy Spirit. Though functional throughout the body, the Word of God gives us strategic placement for all of these elements of spiritual armor. Truth is to protect our loins. According to the dictionary, the loins are the part of the body — regarded as the seat of physical strength and generative power — on either side of the spinal column between the ribs and pelvis (Dictionary.com). The muscles around our spine help to support our upright posture — our backbone. Without the truth of God’s Word we become spineless, so to speak, because we do not have the right support structure for carrying ourselves uprightly. When we tune out God’s Word, we cause a breach in our armor and jeopardize our spiritual well-being. Let us, then, concentrate on the truth of the Word of God and not what the world deems to be truth.
