80-Year-Old Teacher Fired for Complaining About Bathroom Breaks

by Ayvaunn Penn, Your Black World

An 80-year-old teacher by the name of Lillie Leon has been teaching for 34 years, and according to AOL Jobs, a tabloid reports that her current salary is $100,049 a year. Of course this seasoned and well paid New York teacher is filing law suit after she was fired for alleged “insubordination.” All she did was express her concerns to administration because she had to escort 25 students through the school cafeteria anytime a student needed to use the restroom.

Two weeks ago, Leon filed a lawsuit at the Manhattan Supreme Court claiming age discrimination in an effort to regain her teaching position. Leon told the New York Post, “I was expected to bathroom all of the children, boys and girls, at the same time, which is impossible. I really think it was an entrapment….Teaching is my passion, but I was put in a position where it was almost impossible for me to safeguard the safety of the children.”

Since 2006, Leon has had to walk with a cane. For years, she asked to be moved to first grade where students were capable of taking care of their own bathroom needs. Apprently, these requests were never granted. AOL Jobs reports that “the Department of Education asserts that Leon shirked her duties when she simply stopped responding to bathroom break requests, according to CBS News.”

  1. This is absolutely ridiculous. How do you expect ONE teacher to play bathroom escort every single time a child has to use the bathroom? What happened to hall passes so that they can go alone? Why does the WHOLE class have to be interrupted for one child?

I hope she wins her lawsuit.
