Idris Elba Gets Feisty with BET Awards Reporter Over Tyler Perry Comments

by Ayvaunn Penn, Your Black World

Word is spreading of Idris Elba’s arguably snappy attitude with a reporter in the BET Awards press room. The reporter, who remains unnamed, asked the actor who starred in one of Tyler Perry’s films about the comments he made concerning Tyler Perry and his work. The comments the reporter was referring to were shared earlier this year in a media interview. Elba is reported to have said:

“Can I be candid? I don’t like all of Tyler Perry’s films. Yes, I did work with Tyler for ‘Daddy’s Little Girls’ because it portrayed a positive image of a black father. I am happy for Tyler’s success…we need Tyler Perry…by going to support his movies, we need to show economic strength. But we are also responsible for elevating film. I’m not with buffoonish characters like Madea or Big Momma.”

The reporter at the BET Awards asked Elba to clarify his comments and specifically asked him to speak on his opinion of Tyler Perry’s famed character Madea. Elba was very short and to the point when he responded to her saying that his comments were already clear and straight forward. He refused to provide anymore information and simply stated that she needed to revisit his former comments for any further understanding she felt she needed.
