No charges are being brought against the unintentional perpetrator, and the 4-year-old victim is expected to survive. Neighbors and family say that it was common for the two boys to play on the playground outside of their Hillcrest Heights apartment unattended. Just prior to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, however, a routine play date turned almost fatal when the 5-year-old boy found a gun outside and accidently shot his little friend in the back. According to The Washington Post, the oldest child was frightened by what occurred and Prince George’s County police say he “ran into his family’s apartment and hid the gun.”
Police were called to the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway for a shooting when they found the wounded child on the apartment complex playground. The 4-year-old was taken to the hospital. The Washington Post reports that “police eventually recovered the weapon, a handgun, inside the apartment, and detectives are investigating to determine who owns it and where it came from [according to] authorities.” Cpl. Mike Rodriguez says that “the gun owner or those who should have been supervising the boy might face criminal charges. The name of neither child has been identified.
