Because it will drive down property value? Indeed, that is the seemingly ridiculous reason that the Knob Hill Property Owners Association is giving for not allowing Sgt. 1st Class Sean Gittens to rebuild a home in his current neighborhood. Sgt. Gittens needs the new home in order to better suit his disabilities.
Homes For Our Troops — an organization that builds homes for severely disabled veterans — is outraged. They were trying to negotiate with the Augusta, Georgia, association by proposing various house plans. Striving to help the Gittens family remain in their current neighborhood, Homes For Our Troops was hoping that the property owners association would accept one of the proposed plans.
With all of the discord and opposition, however, Sgt. Gittens wife — Sharon Gittens — says they now think it is best to move. The Augusta Chronicle reports that she “told news media Monday the family decided not to stay in Knob Hill because they did not feel they would be welcome… she said [she] was ready to put the situation behind her and thanked neighbors who had supported her family.” Sharon also asked that they “encourage the association to embrace the veterans and not worry so much about property values.”
