After First Lady Michelle Obama was put on the back burner by South Africa’s president, it is so interesting to hear that Oprah Winfrey received an honor in South Africa during the same time that the First Lady was also visiting. The Associate Press reports that “a central South African university known for fraught race relations awarded an honorary education doctorate to Oprah Winfrey Friday, and her visit was welcomed as an acknowledgment of the progress the institution has made toward tolerance.”
Reportedly, the University of Free State audience cheered as Winfrey kneeled and received her degree in the university auditorium. She was also named a “Kovsie” — a member of the university family. This event received international coverage. Other recipients of honorary doctorates from Free State include Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Her new degree was not the only honor Winfrey received while traveling in South Africa. The Associate Press reports that Oprah and Michelle Obama met to have dinner together on Tuesday in Johannesburg.
