With the Hispanic population growing exponentially in the United States, politicians like President Barack Obama are not overlooking the new opportunities for voters. According to reports from the Associated Press, “about 4.6 million Puerto Ricans live on the mainland, boosting a fast-growing Hispanic population that is becoming increasingly important in American politics.” With this knowledge in mind, Mr. President is doing something never done before within the past half century — making an official presidential visit to the island of Puerto Rico.
Although people living on the island can only vote during the primaries, there are many who live on the mainland. Their population is concentrated in New York and Florida with about 841,000 living in the latter state according to a 2010 census. If Obama wins the Puerto Ricans over, he could potentially win at least one state. The Associate Press also reports that while in Puerto Rico, “Obama will make brief remarks upon arrival in San Juan, meet with the island’s Republican governor, Luis Fortuno, and attend another fundraiser.”
