High School Girl Killed While Enjoying the Beach

by Ayvaunn Penn, Your Black World

New York kids were out of school on Thursday for Brooklyn-Queens Day, and many were out on Brighton Beach to celebrate a class-free day. Tysha Jones was one of those students enjoying the Atlantic Ocean breeze when gun fire broke out and the crowd went into chaos. The young 16-year-old girl suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Four others were injured.

According to police reports, the gunfire was the result of a fight that occurred around 5:20 p.m. on the Brighton Beach boardwalk. The gunman fired approximately eight rounds in the air then began spraying the crowd injuring four others and killing Jones. Reportedly, Jones was shot in the left armpit, and she died at Coney Island hospital. As of Friday morning, no arrests had been made.

As Jones’ mother, Cynthia, talked with reporters, she expressed how she initially was not going to let her daughter go to the beach but later gave in. She never believed, however, that her daughter would have ended up dead. She says:

“She was just a lovely girl. She was just an innocent bystander….She had a lot of dreams. She wanted to be a singer, a dancer, she was looking into college, but now it’s all gone.”

Tysha Jones was a Landmark High School junior, and she lived in East Harlem with her mother. She was the youngest of three older siblings.
