Sonja Sohn and her fellow actors from HBO’s “The Wire” talked with Justice Department officials in efforts to help spread awareness of the toll drug abuse takes on children and families. Specifically, these actors who played the role of Baltimore police detectives, took part in a panel discussion with Attorney General Eric Holder on initiating a public awareness program.
During the talks, Sonja Sohn, shared a very personal testimony about her experience with drug abuse. She said there was a time in her younger days that she had been a drug-abusing mother. She wanted to ask for help, but she was afraid that authorities would take her two daughters away from her.
Sohn’s courage to put herself on the line — exposed to public criticism — is extremely commendable. Getting this program started will not be a single-handed effort by Sohn, but I cannot imagine that her raw real-life testimony will not have an impact or be a part of the driving force.
